Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus
2017-2018 Season

June 27, 2017

Welcome to the start of the new 2017-18 Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus season! We have planned a great year
and we are eagerly looking forward to your participation. Our theme this year is Ho`oulu which means to
grow, enrich or nourish.

Highlights below:
We will be producing “Nani na Pua” (a Youth Opera by Herb Mahelona) on November 10, 2017.
This will be a world premier production. The opera is about the life of Princess Lydia Liliu
Kamakaeha (Queen Liliuokalani). ALL HYOC students will be participating.
Ensemble Schedules and time lengths will be the same as last season. See your Schedule / calendar &
placement letter. Check the online calendar from the member section of the website to plug in
concert & music retreat dates. Available now.
We have had some staffing changes. Dr. Loong will continue serving in advisory capacity only.
The Stelline Ensemble will no longer be an entry ensemble. Students in that ensemble must have
progressed through the Bambini Ensemble to be eligible.
The Angeli Ensemble will now accept new 2nd & 3rd grade students as well as students who have
moved up from the Stelline Ensemble.
Ho’okahi, our select ensemble, will continue with the same rehearsal schedule as this past season with
extended Saturday rehearsals. Students will be invited into participation. Students in this select group
will participate in a project based experience including participation on the HOT stage.
We will have students participating on the grand opera stage in the opera Carmen being presented by
the Hawaii Opera Theater in October. Students will be pre-cast.
If your child is grade eligible and wants to take optional class voice and class piano please contact the
office early as space is limited in each section.
We will be participating in the Aloha Week Parade this year. The attire is your black uniform pants
and black athletic shoes. If your child needs new uniform pants please order them by September 12
We are using Dennis Uniforms again this season. Refer to your handbook.
We will also be participating in several collaborations with community arts organizations this season
again including a premier of a Hawaiian Oratorio in the Spring, the Hawaii Opera Theater Mele
Under the Stars Gala Concert in the Fall.

This is our 57th season!
